New Pajamas

We have a tradition that Christmas eve we get new pajamas. This year I decided that I would make the pajamas for Clarissa and Clayton, but I wanted it to be a surprise for Quinn. Since it was going to be a surprise, I could only work on them while Quinn was gone and it was kind of hard to sew them during the day with both kids. So, I only got Clayton's done and I had to go buy some for Clarissa. Hopefully I will still get them sewn soon, along with the 5 other sewing projects that I planned to do but ran out of time for.

Growing Up!

Clarissa has decided that she is too old for stuffed animals and has moved on to more sophisticated nightime cuddle objects.

Edible Rudolph

Clarissa and I made Rudolph suckers to give to her friends for Christmas. (Many of which have yet to be delivered, it's been a crazy week, hopefully we will get them delivered still.)

Clarissa loved helping put the noses on, some made it in the right spot, others needed a little help. It was a little challenging to do it with her, but a ton of fun. She got so excited about making Rudolph suckers.

Despite the challenges, she was an excellent taste tester!

Reindeer Ranch

Two Saturdays ago we went to a reindeer ranch. We got to feed them graham crackers.

It was really fun to see them, they have really big antlers.

Clarissa loved to see them and feed them, although it was really cold.

Clarissa's favorite part was riding this "horsey" in the gift shop. She was very possesive if another kid tried to ride it. She kept saying "mice horsey, mice horsey". Whenever she means to say "my" or "mine" she says the word "mice".

A visit with Santa

This was at our ward Christmas party. Clayton did great with Santa...

....but, once again, Clarissa was so excited to see him and talk about him, up until we wanted her to sit on his lap. Maybe next year!

Goals

About this time of year I start thinking about the things that I want to accomplish during the coming year.  I also reflect on my goals from the past year.  I call them goals and not resolutions because they are rarely resolute and the nature of the goals are not such that you can resolve to do them.  You can resolve to not eat sugar or resolve to read your scriptures every day, but I don’t think the term “resolve” really applies to getting your cholesterol checked.  You see, I agree with the colloquial view that “resolutions are made to be broken”.  Resolutions are typically unattainable or require a steely nerve and a constant uphill battle that I simply don’t have. So I settle for New Year’s “Goals” which are much more within reach and harder to get discouraged about.  My goals usually don’t require an entire year’s worth of work to do (as going to the gym everyday would) but are still lofty and provide me with a challenge throughout the year.  If I don’t accomplish a goal, I don’t get discouraged, I just reevaluate the goal and put it back on the list for next year or I forget about it.

While we’re on the subject of goals, let me enumerate a few things that I have learned about goal setting.

1)      Goals must be attainable

2)      A goal should be quantifiable

3)      A goal that isn’t written down, isn’t a goal

4)      If you don’t evaluate how you are doing, you probably won’t do any better

5)      Goals don’t attain themselves.  You better have a plan.

6)      As my brother says, “It is better to aim a little lower and attain your goal than aim for the stars, give up along the way and land in a pile of crap”

Some might think that last one a pessimistic view, but I like to think of it as baby steps.  Believe it or not there are doctrinal principles behind all six of these points.

All this being said, 2008 wasn’t a very good year for me as far as goals go.  Don’t get me wrong.  I worked diligently on many of these goals, but alas.

Monticello Christmas Parade

After the Train Ride we watched the Monticello Christmas Parade.  I think that this parade is a great commentary on rural Americana.  Please note the "Micky Mouse" Truck and the Candy Cane Girls that preceded the Marching Band.  If you can't afford to have a flag corp, I guess you have candy cane girls.  My overall impression:  Odd yet fun on a level you can't find in the city.

A ride on The Polar Express

Today we got to eat lunch with Santa and ride on a train all at the same time.  We drove to Monticello, IL for our special train ride with santa.  We had such a fabulous time singing carols, eating lunch and visiting with Santa.  I have to admit that my heart did a little flip when Santa walked into our car.  I still believe...Do you?

Story Time

The other day I caught Clarissa reading a story to Clayton. She sure loves having a baby brother.
